Another Wedding!

This just in:
Jesse McIntyre and his girlfriend Christine Herndon got engaged during their vacation in Cape Town, South Africa, earlier this month.  They hiked all the way to the top of Table Mountain one of the days to scope things out.  The next day they decided to go back but took the cable cars this time.  When they got to the top of the mountain, overlooking the beautiful ocean and city, Jesse got down on one knee, proposed, and she said yes! Both families are very excited about their news!

Congrats to Jesse & Christine from all the Cali Hoban's

Fair Board names new fairgrounds CEO
Veteran executive Jerome Hoban will take over for Beazley, who is retiring from post to explore other options.

The Orange County Fair Board has promoted Jerome Hoban, vice president of operations, to the fairgrounds chief executive officer.

Hoban, 38, will take over for CEO Steven Beazley on Tuesday.

"What I liked about Jerome is he has institutional knowledge of the fair history," said Fair Board member Stan Tkaczyk. "He started from the ground up and has a real passion. I see it in the individual energy in how he presents himself, how he talks about projects he's involved in."

Beazley, who has spent much of his adult life working for the fairgrounds, will retire four years to the day from when he was appointed CEO on May 1, 2008.

Hoban, an Orange County native, was a member of 4-H growing up and worked with fair livestock in the summers.

"I was in the middle of an urban setting but doing all this agricultural stuff," he said. "It gets in your blood. You see what it does for you. The fair became like a home to me, and I think it does for a lot of people."

Hoban eventually was hired on to manage the Centennial Farm, a job which helped pay his way through college. He earned a bachelor's degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and an executive MBA from Pepperdine University.

When fairgrounds officials narrowed the list of potential CEOs to five, Hoban's combination of local roots and academic feats set him apart.

"He has a wonderful blend of history, background and heritage, along with a really solid education," Beazley said.

With the Pacific Amphitheater construction on the horizon and the fair's master plan set to expire a few years from now, officials said, it's time for someone to let the dust settle and cement the fair's progress.

"We've been on such a fast pace, it's time now to utilize the assets for the community rather than just get in our own way with construction, and there's nothing wrong with that," Hoban said. "We've all been working hard and it's time to enjoy these things at the fairgrounds."

OC FAIR & EVENT CENTER NAMES
JEROME HOBAN AS INTERIM CEO

Costa Mesa, Calif. (April 26, 2012) - Jerome Hoban, current Vice President of Operations at the OC Fair & Event Center (OCFEC) in Costa Mesa, has been named the interim CEO, succeeding current CEO Dr. Steven Beazley. He will serve in this position for 6 months, pending completion of an executive background check. The appointment begins May 1, 2012.

At the April 26 meeting, the OCFEC Board of Directors appointed Hoban into his new position. "When the Board learned of Steve's plan to retire, the Board agreed Jerome was the right choice to lead the OC Fair & Event Center. Jerome has been with the OC Fair for 19 years and possesses a wide historic and current knowledge base. He has proven his leadership through the years and will be invaluable during this time of change. We are confident in his leadership," said Joyce Tucker, OCFEC Board Chair.

Hoban has served for the past 4 years as the Vice President of Operations and oversaw Fair Planning and Layout; Master Plan and Construction; Event Operations; Facility Maintenance; Creative Services; Information Technology; Audio/Visual; Event Production; Sales; and Sponsorship and Marketing. As Vice President, he managed a projects' budget of more than $30 million, 500 employees and contractors, and the operation of more than 100 events each year.

"I am honored to be chosen to lead the OC Fair & Event Center into this next generation of the Fair. Steve has taken the Fair to an all-time high and I look forward to continuing along this path," said Hoban.

Beazley, who has worked at the Fair in a variety of positions since he was 12 years old, plans to transition out May 1.  The 2012 Fair theme, "Home Sweet Home," seems appropriate for this transition. "Of the accomplishments I have been part of at the Fair, none has been more satisfying than readying the organization for the future through conscious succession planning. I am in full support of Jerome Hoban taking the organization into the future and to the next level," said Beazley.

From Centennial Farm educational programs to event operations and capital planning, Hoban's 19 years at OCFEC has exposed him to nearly every operational function in the fair industry. Prior to joining the Fair team, Hoban grew up participating in all the OC Fair had to offer. Through Boy Scouts, FFA and 4-H, Hoban has spent his life learning and understanding the value the Fair brings to the Orange County community.  He earned an Executive Master's degree in Business Administration from Pepperdine University while working full-time for the Fair. His Bachelor's of Science degree in Agricultural Business, Marketing from California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo gave him a strong foundation and understanding of agriculture and the need for the fair industry. He is also a graduate of the Public Assembly Facilities Management School (PAFMS) and is a member of the International Association of Assembly Managers (IAAM) and the Western Fairs Association (WFA)

Good Job Jerome!

Marietta's invite from Ghirardelli Chocolate Company

As some of you know Marietta LOVES ice cream, chocolate is second I think. So she sent me this invite for the ice cream eating contest 2012, she was in it last year in San Francisco. They are using it in their advertising. Looks like she loses out this year being on the east coast. Here's what she said: "YES!  That's me, close to achieving something I had been training for, for over 29 years.  (In 3rd pic down, in green shirt between 2 guys)  Can you believe I was a close 2nd in the ice cream eating contest?!  I bet if we were still in San Fran there would be no competition this year now that I have an extra bun in the oven, so I can technically be eating for two!" So sorry you can't compete this year Marietta.

Danya's Color Guard Competition

(Danya is the beautiful one right in the middle of the 2nd row)

They've won first place in their division (out of 8 teams) at their last 3 competitions and they’ll compete at championships on April 21.  It’s very exciting because they actually have a good chance of placing high or winning at championships for the first time in her color-guard career, which she’s been doing since 7th grade.  If anyone wants to watch her perform, she has an exhibition at Eldorado High School in Placentia on Apr. 19 in the evening.
Yea Danya and the whole team, good luck in the next competition on April 19, We're rooting for you!!

Going Bald

On day 13 the hair started thinning, by day 15 it was falling out by the handful. So we had a shaving party on Good Friday. Then we did some wig shopping. Both Bridget agree they are hot and as much trouble as real hair. We got some great Wisda shots of everyone, there was 6 of us and the 2 grandsons. Bridget's husband Jason has a pretty head too, just not by choice, but I'll post them later. For Easter Celebration at the Watts' house KD took these shots of us. We had a wonderful brunch with the Molnar's, Nan, Papa Tom and Aunt Jill Buyan. Great food, then we sang Happy Birthday to Jenna who turned 3.
